The skull bowl goes out on the porch table every Halloween, and every Halloween I swear I’ll stand next to it. I never do. My kid wants to trick-or-treat, my partner vanishes with the good flashlight, and the bowl sits there alone, guarded by nothing but a battery candle and hope.
Last year the teenager from three doors down tipped half the bowl into his pillowcase in one smooth motion. I know because the doorbell camera caught it, and honestly, the form was impressive. I printed the please take one style design at 8×10 on 80 lb matte, taped it to the porch table at forehead height with the skull right below it, and it read clearly from the sidewalk. That’s the whole job of a candy sign, really. Legible from the sidewalk in the dark.
One thing to know going in: these are SVG files, which means your printer doesn’t open them directly. I dropped mine into a free browser editor, exported a PDF, done in five minutes, but the first time I tried I sat there double-clicking the file like it owed me money.
Pointing the Whole Street Toward the Bowl
These are village style signs, the pointy directional kind, and they solved a problem I didn’t know I had. Our bowl sits back from the steps, and half the little kids last year hovered at the gate unsure if they were allowed up. I printed two of these, mounted them on paint sticks, and staked a tiny trail from the sidewalk to the table. Candy, this way. Kids follow arrows. It’s the law.
Fair warning, the designs are heavy on black, and my ink level dropped visibly after four prints. Worth it, but maybe don’t do this the same night you need to print your kid’s book report.
The Brushstroke One Over the Party Candy Bar
For the indoor party, the candy bar needs a header, and this brushstroke lettering is the one I hung over ours. Big loose strokes, looks hand painted, and in a plain black frame above the table of jars it made my folding table look like I planned things. A party guest asked where I bought it. The nitpick: those brush edges need size to breathe. At 5×7 the texture turns to mush. Print it 8×10 minimum, and if your printer is running low on ink the thin stroke ends ghost out first, so check before the night of.
For the Adults Who Show Up With Pillowcases Too
Every candy bar has that one adult standing guard over the good chocolate, and this sign is for them. I will trade candy for wine. I set it on a small easel next to the drinks at our grown-up half of the party and it got more photos than the food did. My sister texted me the file link before she even left.
It comes in a couple of versions, one with a busier background. Use the plain one. The busy version fought with my frame and lost, and the text is the joke, so let the text win.
Laser Files, No Laser Required
This bundle is built for laser cutters, and my sister has one, so she cut me a wooden candy here sign that now lives by the front steps and shrugs off rain like it’s nothing. Paper signs are great until October weather has opinions. Wood does not care. If you know anyone with a cutter, this is the file to bring them with a plate of cookies.
And if you don’t? The outlines still print fine on cardstock. I did one by hand with scissors and a craft knife, and it took most of an evening plus one small bandage, so budget accordingly.
The Sign the Kids Make Themselves
This one is a coloring page, a big candy bucket overflowing with treats, and it became the surprise hit of our kids’ craft afternoon. I printed a stack on regular paper, dumped the crayon bin on the table, and told them the best one gets taped to the candy station. Instant focus. Ten minutes of silence I did not know six-year-olds could produce.
The details are a little fine for the youngest colorers, my kid’s friend just scribbled the whole bucket purple and called it done, which frankly worked. If you want the winner to survive the porch, print that final one on cardstock. Crayon on 80 lb feels weirdly luxurious.

Sometimes no premade sign says the exact thing you need. Mine needed to say take TWO, the big bowl is a decoy, which is a long story involving the aforementioned teenager. This file is a set of candy graphics, wrapped sweets and lollipops and such, and I scattered them around my own text in a free editor to build a custom sign that didn’t look like a ransom note.
Check that you’re using the transparent PNG versions when you layer them, because I dragged in one with a white box around it and didn’t notice until after printing. The white box always waits until after printing.
The Doorbell Note for When Nobody’s Home
This is the older door signs bundle, and it’s where I found my doorbell note, the sign that does my job while I’m out with my kid. Taped right above the button: help yourself, take one, happy Halloween. It’s the politest scarecrow I own. Does it stop a determined pillowcase? No. Does it make most kids pause and take a fair handful? The doorbell camera says mostly yes.
A few designs in this one show their age, very 2022 fonts, but the simple text-forward ones are the keepers anyway. They’re sized for letter paper, so you’ll trim a bit of white edge, or do what I do and call the border intentional.
The Pumpkin I Turned Teal
Here’s the one that matters most on my porch. The boy next door has a peanut allergy, and a teal pumpkin by the door is the signal that there are safe, non-food treats available. This file is a pumpkin basket stuffed with candy, and I recolored the pumpkin teal in a free editor, added his treats live in the small box underneath, and set it beside the skull bowl. His mom hugged me. In the driveway. In front of people.
The recolor took some fiddling, because orange hides in the shading layers and my first attempt came out teal with suspiciously orange shadows, like a pumpkin blushing. Ten extra minutes with the fill tool sorted it.
A Ghost Cute Enough for the Preschool Crowd
Not every trick-or-treater wants to meet a skull. The littlest ones come by before sunset, and this kawaii ghost scene, a round happy ghost surrounded by candy, is the sign I put low on the table at their eye level. One toddler waved at it. Goodbye, my heart.
It prints in soft pastels, which is the point, but my printer rendered them paler than the preview, almost gone in porch light. I bumped the saturation before reprinting and the second copy looked right. Do a test print at 4×6 before you commit a full sheet of the good cardstock.
